Editing

Our biggest method of organization is the Google calendar that the other three online editors and I have access to. The Google calendar helps all of the online staff members know if a story has been posted (because it will be changed to gray). Each section (sports, news, features, opinion, etc.) is color coded with its own color to see the variation on the calendar. I also post the People of Fenton on the calendar to keep track of them. The calendar helps my staff stay organized regarding postings and helps keep us accountable to make sure that stories are getting posted.

Organization with editing stories

For the process of editing stories, I have divided all of the writers for this year into four groups, because there are four online editors, including myself. This gives each editor two writers that they are responsible for editing their stories. Once the editor has edited the story one to two times, the story is then given to me to proof, then to our adviser. Furthermore, to mix things up, every Friday the editors are to edit different groups. That way, each person has a variety of different people editing their story.

My responsibilities as Online Editor-in-Chief

As Online Editor-in-Chief, my responsibilities have shifted from when I was just an editor. I have tried to take these responsibilities on with grace, as this year I have had eight writers and three online editors who I am in charge of. I edit all three editors' stories, which is typically two to three stories each, and make the final edits of writers' stories. I am also responsible for leading story idea meetings, making story assignments and posting stories to the website. I also interview some and post all of our People of Fenton stories, a segment where we interview students and faculty. My time requirement is usually about an hour each night between writing my own stories, editing and posting on the website.
